Our Correspondent in Romania, Alexandru Lovin, celebrates his 26th birthday today. Allowing for the time zone difference, this must be why one of my neighbors fired off a sudden fusillade of mortars and bottle rockets at 2 a.m. Happy Birthday, Alexandru!
P.S. Anyone here — and I'm thinking of you, Colin — who still wonders whether living under a communist dictatorship "was really all that bad" is invited to write to Alexandru. Romania under Ceauşescu wasn't a different country; it was a different planet, and one worth learning about. It ain't all Carpathian Mountains and Transylvania, folks.
